What happens between the offer letter and your first day at a bank?
The offer letter is the starting gun, not the finish line. Depending on the bank, you're usually looking at 2 to 8 weeks of paperwork, checks, and formalities before you actually sit at a desk. Here's the real sequence for banks in India, both PSU and private.
Document Verification and Acceptance
First, you sign and return the offer letter within the deadline it states — miss this and some banks will simply move to the next candidate. Then comes the joining kit: Aadhaar, PAN, education certificates (mark sheets and degree, not just the final one), relieving letter and last three months' pay slips if you're coming from another job, and your bank account details for salary credit. Fill out the PF/UAN nomination forms at this stage too.
Background Verification (BGV)
A third-party agency (AuthBridge, First Advantage, and similar firms handle most of this) verifies your education, employment history, address, and often runs a police verification and a CIBIL/credit score check. This is where most delays happen — it typically takes 1 to 3 weeks, longer if a previous employer is slow to respond to verification requests.
Be straight about your resume from the start. A gap you didn't disclose, an inflated designation, or a mismatched employment date is the single most common reason offers get pulled at this stage — not because the gap itself is disqualifying, but because it wasn't disclosed.
Medical Test
Some banks, especially PSU banks and NBFCs hiring for field or sales roles, require a basic medical fitness certificate, sometimes at an empanelled hospital. It's routine — vision, blood pressure, general fitness — not something to stress over unless you have a known condition worth flagging in advance.
Bond or Service Agreement
This one matters. Many PSU banks (and some private ones for specialist or trainee programs) ask you to sign a service bond, commonly 2 to 3 years, with a specified payout if you leave before that period ends. Read the exact bond amount and terms before signing — it's a real financial commitment, not boilerplate.
Branch or Location Allotment
You'll receive a posting order naming your branch or location. PSU banks can post you anywhere in the country based on your merit rank and vacancy; private banks usually keep you closer to the city you interviewed in, though not always.
Induction and Training
Almost no bank puts you on a live desk on day one. Expect an induction program — a few days for a straightforward branch role, several weeks for specialized functions like credit or wealth — covering compliance, KYC/AML basics, product knowledge, and the bank's internal systems.
What a Realistic Timeline Looks Like
- Private bank, standard role: 2-4 weeks from offer to first day
- PSU bank: often 4-12 weeks, mostly due to BGV and administrative processing
- Specialist or trainee programs: can run longer if there's a formal training batch to join
If you haven't heard anything within the window your offer letter mentions, don't assume it's fallen through — call HR or your recruiter directly. Silence at this stage is almost always process delay, not a withdrawn offer.
If you're still building toward that first offer, AKROS Solution's Retail Banking Classroom program covers exactly the compliance, KYC/AML, and product knowledge that banks train you on during induction — so you walk in already ahead of the batch.
Related questions
Can a bank withdraw an offer after background verification?
Yes, if the BGV turns up a discrepancy like inflated experience, an undisclosed employment gap, or a criminal record that wasn't declared. A clean, honest resume rarely runs into trouble at this stage.
Is the joining bond at PSU banks negotiable?
Generally no — the bond amount and duration are standard policy, not something negotiated per candidate. You can ask HR to clarify the exact payout terms before you sign, but the bond itself isn't optional if the role requires it.
What if my joining date gets pushed back multiple times?
A single delay for BGV or administrative reasons is normal, especially with PSU banks. If it happens repeatedly with no clear explanation, follow up in writing and ask for a firm date — it's reasonable to expect one.
